TALLSHIPS 2004

The following photographs were taken during the tallships event, Halifax, late July / early August 2004. This event celebrated the 400th anniversary of the settlement of Nova Scotia and was part of the World Acadian Congress held in Nova Scotia this year.

Name / Home port: EUROPA The Hague, Netherlands.

Comments: Steel-hulled, three-masted Barque with a sparred length of 185 ft. EUROPA is a fairly frequent visitor to the port and was one of the few larger vessels to sail by in full rig on a hot and breezy day.

Year built / Builder: 1911.

Details: LOA - 150 ft; beam - 24 ft; rig height - 109 ft; sail area - 12,500 square ft (24,500 sqare ft with studding sails).

Name / Home port: GAZELA PHILADELPHIA, Philadelphia, PENN

Comments: Wood hull, three-masted Barquentine with a sparred length of 178 ft.

Year built / Builder: 1883. Underwent a major re-build in 1901.

Details: LOA - 150 ft; beam - 27' 9"; rig height - 100 ft.

Name / Home port: CUAHATEMOC, Acapulco, Mexico

Comments: Steel-hulled, three-masted Barquentine. She is the Mexican Navy's sail training ship.

Year built / Builder: 1984, Spain

Details: LOA - 270 ft; beam - 39' 4".

Name / Home port: MIRCEA, Constanza, Romania.

Comments: Making a fine sight with yards manned, the Romanian Navy sail training, steel-hulled, three-masted Barque with a sparred length of 269 ft.

Year built / Builder: 1939, Blohm & Voss, Hamburg.

Details: 1,604 tons displacement; LOA - 239 ' 5"; beam - 39' 3"; sail area - 18, 830 square ft; MAN 6 cyl auxiliary motor (500 bhp); 9.5 knots. Crew - 83 plus 140 midshipmen for training.

Name / Owner: EAGLE, United States Coast Guard training ship, New London, CONN.

Comments: Steel-hulled, three-masted Barque with a sparred length of 295 ft.

Year built / Builder: Launched 1936, Blohm & Voss, Hamburg.

Details: Originally the HORST WESSEL, she was taken by the US as part of reparations at the end of WWII arriving at her now home port in 1946. She is a frequent visitor to Halifax. 1,816 displacement tons at full load; 231 ft at waterline x 39' 1" beam; sail area - 21,350 square feet; MAN auxiliary diesel (728 bhp); 10.5 knots. Complement - 280 crew and trainees.

Name / Home port: TENACIOUS, Southampton, UK.

Comments: The UK was represented by the Jubilee Sailing Trust's wood-hulled, three-masted Barque TENACIOUS.

Year built / Builder: 1996 - 2000 at the Jubilee Trust's own yard to the design of Tony Castro. She is the largest wooden tall ship of her kind in the world.

Details: Sparred length - 213' 3"; rig height - 129' 9". She made her maiden voyage 1 September, 2000.

Name / Home port: PICTON CASTLE, Flag: Cook Islands; Home port: Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

Comments: Steel-hulled, three-masted, 300 ton Barque with a sparred length of 176 ft.

Year built / Builder: 1928 - converted from a trawler?

Details: LOA - 148 ft; rig height: 100 ft.

Name / Home port: POGORIA, Gdynia, Poland; entered by the Polish Sail training Association.

Comments: Steel-hulled, three-masted Barque with a sparred length of 154 ft. Her near sister, ISKRA also took part in the event.

Year built / Builder: 1980, Gdansk, from the iron shackle FRATERNITY. Designed by Zygmunt Choren.

Details: LOA - 135 ft.

Name / Home port: PRIDE OF BALTIMORE II Baltimore, Maryland.

Comments: Wood-hulled, two-masted Square Topsail Schooner with a sparred length of 170 ft. Just as she was sailing by, her deafening "broadside" led to an involuntary twitch of the camera shutter!

Year built / Builder: 1988 as a replica privateer to the design of Thomas C. Gillmer.

Details: LOA - 108 ft; beam - 26 ft; rig height - 107 ft; sail area - 10,442 square feet.
