Name / Owner (Manager) / Flag: SEA BIRD IMO No: unknown, Kris Land, San Diego CA, U.S.A. Flag: U.S.A. (San Diego).
Comments: Photographed May 7, 2007, San Diego. SEA BIRD was one of two Camano-class light cargo ships seen while on the cruise. Vessels of this class were built for the US Army for coastal voyages during WWII. SEA BIRD was completed as the FS-289 in 1945 and served for 5 years with the Army before being acquired in 1950 by the US Navy as the USNS NEW BEDFORD (T-AKL-17). She was placed out of service in 1961 and then in 1963 was reclassified as unclassified! with the same name but the new pennant number IX-308, a number that can still be seen chiselled into the hull plates behind the bow (Photo 2). The NEW BEDFORD served as a torpedo test firing vessel from 1971 until struck from the Naval Register in 1995. She was sold for commercial service a year later and was converted into a tuna longliner as the SEA BIRD. The title of her website (see SEA BIRD adventures) suggests a new role in the offing.
Year built / Builder: 1945-03, Wheeler Shipbuilding, Whitestone, New York, U.S.A. (yard no: 103)
Details: 700 t loaded displacement. Dimensions: loa: 176.5 ft b: 32.8 ft draught: 10.0 ft. Main engine: 2, General Motors, Cleveland Division V6 diesels. Power: 1,000 bhp Speed: 12.0 knots.

Name / Owner (Manager) / Flag: BETSY ROSS IMO No: unknown, Owners: unknown. Flag: U.S.A. (? Point).
Comments: May 10, 2007. Another Camano-class cargo ship in more original condition than the SEA BIRD. This one was seen moored at Astoria, Oregon. It transpires from leads provided by "Carl" that she was in the process of restoration for a new role as a cruise ship for a 3-month voyage to South Africa (see: sail-talk for details). Plans may have fallen through since her web site, www.betsyrosscruises.com, is no longer active. She was formerly the FS 313 and served in the Pacific during WWII and then in Korea and Vietnam before becoming a training ship at Astoria. She was retired from Army service in January, 1988 and was sold in 2004. Photo 2
Year built / Builder: 1944-10, John H. Mathis Company, Camden NJ, U.S.A. (yard no: 151)
Details: 560 t light displacement (700 t loaded displacement). Dimensions: loa: 176.5 ft b: 32.8 ft draught: 10.0 ft. Main engine: 2, General Motors, Cleveland Division Model 6-278A, V6 diesels. Power: 1,000 bhp Speed: 12.0 knots.

Name / Owner (Manager) / Flag: WOODBINE IMO No: 8884490, Woodbine Alaska Fish Co., Juneau AK. Flag: U.S.A. (Juneau AK).
Comments: May 10, 2007. Rather surprisingly, appearance-wise, the WOODBINE was originally a USCG seagoing tender of the same class as the IRONWOOD above. Considerable steel plating was evidently added, disguising her original appearance, when she was converted into a fishing vessel for Alaska service. I believe this conversion took place in the early 1970s. Photo 2
Year built / Builder: 1942-11, Zenith Dredge Co., Duluth MN, U.S.A.
Details: 769 gt. Dimensions: loa: 52.67 m b: 11.33 m draught: - m. Main engine: 1, diesel. Power: 441 kW Speed: 12.0 knots

CLASSIC COASTERS AT CRISTOBAL.
Comments: April 16, 2007. This photograph was taken at the port of Cristobal, Panama, just before dawn and shows four old coastal cargo ships tied up at one of the quays. The light was poor but we passed close enough to be able to identify them (more or less!). They are left to right:
LADY CARIBE ex KUEHOLM-90, ex CHR. HANSEN-87, ex BIRTHE BJORN-85, ex-PETRA-82, ex NINA-78, ex PETER SAXBERG-68, IMO number: 5275973. 399 gt / built 1957 by Schiffswerft Pohl & Jozwiak GmbH, Hamburg.
DON EDGAR ex CEMIDA-93, ex WINDO-88, ex URKERSINGEL-69. IMO number: 5374248. 495 gt / built 1959 by Sloep-en Bootbouwerij H. Kerstholt, Groningen.

IMO number: 5100532. 423 gt / built 1956, Schiffswerft H. Rancke, Hamburg (Neuenfelde), Germany (yard no: 172). The ship was a serious casualty 10/7/99 when she suffered hull failure at Coco Solo. As the SAN ANDREAS she served as a research ship for the Government of the Republic of Colombia. Converted from research ship to general cargo in 1998. Converted from general cargo to research ship in 1986.
LADY CARIBE is owned by Bocamar S.A., Panama, DON EDGAR is Bolivian flagged, owners unknown and CANDELA V is owned by Kedinger Marine Corp., Panama, and managed by Transmar EU of Maicao, Colombia. Flag: Panama. Three of the coasters have similar tarpaulin covered deck cargo.
