SEA BIRD

Name / Owner (Manager) / Flag: SEA BIRD    IMO No: unknown, Kris Land, San Diego CA, U.S.A. Flag: U.S.A. (San Diego).

Comments: Photographed May 7, 2007, San Diego. SEA BIRD was one of two Camano-class light cargo ships seen while on the cruise. Vessels of this class were built for the US Army for coastal voyages during WWII. SEA BIRD was completed as the FS-289 in 1945 and served for 5 years with the Army before being acquired in 1950 by the US Navy as the USNS NEW BEDFORD (T-AKL-17). She was placed out of service in 1961 and then in 1963 was reclassified as unclassified! with the same name but the new pennant number IX-308, a number that can still be seen chiselled into the hull plates behind the bow (Photo 2). The NEW BEDFORD served as a torpedo test firing vessel from 1971 until struck from the Naval Register in 1995. She was sold for commercial service a year later and was converted into a tuna longliner as the SEA BIRD. The title of her website (see SEA BIRD adventures) suggests a new role in the offing.

Year built / Builder: 1945-03, Wheeler Shipbuilding, Whitestone, New York, U.S.A. (yard no: 103)

Details: 700 t loaded displacement. Dimensions: loa: 176.5 ft b: 32.8 ft draught: 10.0 ft. Main engine: 2, General Motors, Cleveland Division V6 diesels. Power: 1,000 bhp Speed: 12.0 knots.

BETSY ROSS

Name / Owner (Manager) / Flag: BETSY ROSS    IMO No: unknown, Owners: unknown. Flag: U.S.A. (? Point).

Comments: May 10, 2007. Another Camano-class cargo ship in more original condition than the SEA BIRD. This one was seen moored at Astoria, Oregon. It transpires from leads provided by "Carl" that she was in the process of restoration for a new role as a cruise ship for a 3-month voyage to South Africa (see: sail-talk for details). Plans may have fallen through since her web site, www.betsyrosscruises.com, is no longer active. She was formerly the FS 313 and served in the Pacific during WWII and then in Korea and Vietnam before becoming a training ship at Astoria. She was retired from Army service in January, 1988 and was sold in 2004. Photo 2

Year built / Builder: 1944-10, John H. Mathis Company, Camden NJ, U.S.A. (yard no: 151)

Details: 560 t light displacement (700 t loaded displacement). Dimensions: loa: 176.5 ft b: 32.8 ft draught: 10.0 ft. Main engine: 2, General Motors, Cleveland Division Model 6-278A, V6 diesels. Power: 1,000 bhp Speed: 12.0 knots.

IRONWOOD

Name / Owner (Manager) / Flag: IRONWOOD    IMO No: unknown, Department of Labor, Jobs Corps Maritime Training Program, Astoria, Oregon. Flag: U.S.A.

Comments: May 10, 2007. Three other ships constructed during WWII were seen in port at Astoria, Oregon, or in the Columbia River. This one, the IRONWOOD, entered Coast Guard service as a Seagoing Tender (WLB-297) in 1943 and remained in service until decommissioned in 2000. Evidently, ships of this class (Balsam, 180 footers) were built to last as witnessed by the number that have found useful employment after USCG decommissioning - I saw two others in the space of a few days. IRONWOOD is now a jobs training ship based at Astoria.

Year built / Builder: 1943, Coast Guard Yard, Curtis Bay, Baltimore MD, U.S.A.

Details: 935 t standard displacement. Dimensions: loa: 180.0 ft b: 37.0 ft draught: 13.0 ft. Main engine: 1, D-E Power: 1,200 hp Speed: 15.0 knots.

WOODBINE

Name / Owner (Manager) / Flag: WOODBINE    IMO No: 8884490, Woodbine Alaska Fish Co., Juneau AK. Flag: U.S.A. (Juneau AK).

Comments: May 10, 2007. Rather surprisingly, appearance-wise, the WOODBINE was originally a USCG seagoing tender of the same class as the IRONWOOD above. Considerable steel plating was evidently added, disguising her original appearance, when she was converted into a fishing vessel for Alaska service. I believe this conversion took place in the early 1970s. Photo 2

Year built / Builder: 1942-11, Zenith Dredge Co., Duluth MN, U.S.A.

Details: 769 gt. Dimensions: loa: 52.67 m b: 11.33 m draught: - m. Main engine: 1, diesel. Power: 441 kW Speed: 12.0 knots

Comments: May 10, 2007. This ship was built as a Landing Ship Medium, the LSM 380, and saw service in the Pacific during WWII. She was converted to a salvage ship by Fred Devine who purchased her from the Navy.

Year built / Builder: 1945, Brown Shipbuilding Co., U.S.A..

RIVAL

Name / Owner (Manager) / Flag: RIVAL    Ebbco Industries Inc., San Diego, CA. Flag: U.S.A. (San Diego).

Comments: May 7, 2007. This unusual, 64-year-old, steel-hulled trawler was photographed returning to the Port of San Diego. I took the photograph not expecting to be able to find any information, but she is listed in LR. I should imagine that at sometime in the past she was converted from something quite different from her current configuration.

Year built / Builder: 1943-00, DeKom Shipbuilding Corp., New York, U.S.A.

Details: 196 gt. Dimensions: lreg: 33.56 m b: 7.93 m draught: - m. Main engines: 1 diesel. Power: 221 kW. Max. speed: - knots.

She was completed as the US Navy minesweeper, YMS-123 in 1942 and was striken in 1946. She now operates a coastal passenger and cargo service in Nootka Sound, British Columbia.

CLASSIC COASTERS AT CRISTOBAL.

Comments: April 16, 2007. This photograph was taken at the port of Cristobal, Panama, just before dawn and shows four old coastal cargo ships tied up at one of the quays. The light was poor but we passed close enough to be able to identify them (more or less!). They are left to right:

As the SAN ANDREAS she served as a research ship for the Government of the Republic of Colombia. Converted from research ship to general cargo in 1998. Converted from general cargo to research ship in 1986.
