With a retreating snow squall in the background and the sun breaking briefly through heavy cloud cover the chemical / oil products tanker MERSINI rides at anchor in the Bedford Basin. The heavily laden, Suez-Max crude carrier UNITED STAR (ex STAR OHIO-07, CITADELLE-92) arriving in the harbour to unload at Imperial Oil on December 16. IMO number: 9014846. Manager: Marine Management Services, Piraeus. Flag: Liberia. Gross tonnage: 80579 (149563 dwt). Completed: 1992 by Samsung H.I., Koje, S. Korea. Dimensions: loa: 274.0 m b: 48.0 m. Departing Autoport on December 18 with flurries flying, the vehicle's carrier with an unusual colour scheme is the LAPIS ARROW. IMO number: 9361809. Managed by Stamco Ship Management, Piraeus; operating for K-Line. Flag: Bahamas. Gross tonnage: 41000 - 4,900 car capacity. Completed 2006 by Uljanik Brodogradiliste, Pula, Croatia. Dimensions: loa: 176.0 m b: 31.1 m draught: 8.8 m.

Earlier the same day at minus 20+ Celsius wind chill and heavier snow conditions, Atlantic Towing's ATLANTIC ELM (ex IRVING ELM 381 gt / 1980) completed what must have been an uncomfortably frigid tow of the FARLEY MOWAT from Sydney, Nova Scotia. FARLEY MOWAT (ex OCEAN WARRIOR-02, SEA SHEPHERD III-00, SKANDI OCEAN-97, M VULCAN-95, CAM VULCAN-95, STM OCEAN-90, SKANDI OCEAN-90, JOHAN HJORT-83): IMO number: 5172602. Flag: not known. Gross tonnage: 677. Completed 1958 by AS Mjellem & Karlsen, Bergen, Norway, as a research trawler. Dimensions: loa: 52.4 m b: 9.3 m . Main engine: diesel. Power: 1030 kW. Speed: 10.0 knots. The ship is well known in Atlantic Canada as the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's "enforcement" ship which was seized by Fisheries and OceansCanada in April 2008 for interference with the seal hunt in the Cabot Strait. She has been berthed at Sydney since then pending sale by the Canadian Government.

Back in 1994, one of the cable ships (ice breaking) seen in Halifax was the JOHN CABOT owned at the time by Teleglobe of Montreal and managed by Cable & Wireless. She was sold in 1996 to McDermott Subsea Services and was refitted on Teesside before being sold on to the Italian telecommunications company Elettra in 1997 as the CERTAMEN. She remains in service to this day for that company. IMO number: 6514974. 1994: Flag: Canada (Ottawa). Gross tonnage: 5234. Completed: 1965 by Canadian Vickers, Montreal, for the Canadian Coast Guard. Dimensions: loa: 95.5 m b: 18.4 m draught: 10.4 m. Main engine(s): D-E, twin screws. Power: 6624 kW Speed: 15.0 kn.

From the same year is a photograph of the research vessel HUDSON looking much the same as today other than the colour scheme, which is now Coast Guard red. IMO number: 5405279. 1994: Managed by Canadian Coast Guard. Flag: Canada (Ottawa). Gross tonnage: 3721. Completed: 1963 by Saint John SB & DD Ltd., Saint John (modernized in 1990). Dimensions: loa: 90.4 m; b: 15.4 m; draught: 6.8 m. Main engine(s): D-E, twin screws. Power: 6469 kW Speed: 14.0 kn. She is still based in Dartmouth.

In August 1994 the Coast Guard heavy icebreaker LOUIS S. ST. LAURENT arrived back in Halifax to a watery reception having circumnavigated North America, including the North Pole, accompanied by the US icebreaker POLAR SEA. IMO number: 6705937. Flag: Canada (Ottawa). Gross tonnage: 11441. Completed: 1969, Canadian Vickers, Montreal (modernized and converted from T-E to D-E at Halifax Shipyard 1988-1993). Dimensions: loa: 119.6 m; b: 24.4 m; draught: 9.9 m. Main engine(s): D-E (5, 16 cyl Krupp MaK diesels), triple screws. Power: 20142 kW Speed: 16.0 kn. She is still based in Dartmouth.

The U.S. Coast Guard heavy icebreaker POLAR SEA arrived to the same reception and sailed later the same day. IMO number: 7391252. Flag: U.S.A. Gross tonnage: 13190. Completed: 1978 by Lockheed Shipbuilding, Seattle. Dimensions: loa: 121.9 m b: 25.5 m. Main engine: D-E & GT-E, triple screws. Power: 88425 kW. Speed: 17.0 knots.

Units of the U.S. Navy visit Halifax several times a year. In June 1995 it was the turn of the Tarawa-class, amphibious landing ship NASSAU (pennant: LHA 4). ID number: 6130165. Gross tonnage: 28233 (39300 loaded displacement). Completed: 1979 by Litton Ingalls, Pascagoula West. Dimensions: loa: 257.3 m; b: 32.3 m. Main engine(s): 2, geared steam turbines Power: 51520 kW Speed: 22.0 (34.0 max) kn. NASSAU is one of two of the class still in service.

At the time I started taking photographs of ships in Halifax, the small ro-ro cargo ship CHRISTINA C was chartered to the St. Pierre et Miquelon service. Since then many other similar type ships have run the route, the current being the DUTCH RUNNER. IMO number: 8616623. Managed by Orion Rederierne A/S, Denmark. Flag: Denmark. Gross tonnage: 1814 (1748 dwt). Completed: 1988 by Orskov Christensen Staalskibsvaerft A/S, Frederikshavn, Denmark. Dimensions: loa: 85.36 m b: 14.0 m draught: 3.66 m. Main engine(s): 2, MAN-B&W Alpha 6 cyl diesels. Power: 1620 kW. Speed: 13.5 kn. She was sold in 1994 becoming the FINOLA and was converted to a livestock carrier in 1997 moving principally sheep between Australasia and Asia.

The EUROPE FEEDER (subsequently - PANABO, CFS PANABO-05, TECMARINE SPRINT-02, EUROPE FEEDER-02, SEA RACER-99) was chartered to EIMSKIP of Iceland for a while in 1994/5. IMO number: 8913710. Managed by Reederei Navylloyd AG, Basle, Switzerland. Flag: Liberia. Gross tonnage: 5999 (6886 dwt) - 490 TEUs. Completed: 1993 by Stocznia Polnocna Im. Bohaterow Westerplatte, Gdansk, Poland. Dimensions: loa: 120.9 m b: 18.6 m draught: 7.0 m. Main engine(s): ZGODA 8 cyl diesel. Power: 5760 kW. Speed: 16.0 kn. REYJKAFOSS is now the ship most often seen in Halifax on this service.

Secunda's multi-purpose cargo ship JD MITCHELL (ex ZINCMASTER-95) used to operate a general cargo service from Halifax to Cuba in the 1990s. After this photo was taken she was fitted with two cranes for handling containers. IMO number: 7356288. Managers: Secunda Marine Services Ltd., Dartmouth NS. Flag: Barbados. Gross tonnage: 12522 (17605 dwt). Completed: 1975 by Whyalla Shipbuilding & Engineering, Whyalla, Australia. Dimensions: loa: loa: 177.8 m b: 21.2 m draught: 8.4 m. Main engine(s): Sulzer 5 cyl diesel. Power: 6072 kW Speed: 13.7 kn. She was sold in 2007 becoming the NITA and was broken up at Alang later in the same year.

The ro-ro multi purpose cargo ship GERMANIA is seen arriving Halterm in November 1995 with Canadian military equipment from the Balkans. IMO number: 9067544. Managed by Hartmann Schiffahrts, Leer, Germany. Flag: Germany. Gross tonnage: 8721 (9355 dwt) - 644 TEUs. Completed: 1993 by Brand Werft GmbH & Co. KG, Oldenburg, Germany. Dimensions: loa: 125.5 m b: 19.0 m draught: 8.0. Main engine(s): Krupp MaK 6 cyl diesel. Power: 6604 kW. Speed: 16.0 kn. She still belongs to the same company with name unchanged.

Thein & Heyenga's general cargo ship STADT NORDEN (ex - CAFE EXPRESS-93, STADT NORDEN-92, DELMAS ZAIRE-90, STADT NORDEN; subsequently: WILSTEDT-01, NOUAKCHOTT-00, EEMBAY-99, STADT NORDEN-99, FLS AMERICA-97, STADT NORDEN-97) was chartered to Melfi Lines for service to Cuba in 1994. IMO number: 8506464. Flag: Germany. Gross tonnage: 2800 (2985 dwt) - 246 TEUs. Completed: 1986 by Seebeckwerft AG, Bremerhaven, Germany. Dimensions: loa: 85.6 m b: 15.2 m draught: 5.4 m. Main engine(s): Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz 9 cyl diesel Power: 1348 kW. Speed: 12.0 kn. Since 2006 she has traded in the South Pacific as the SOUTHERN EXPRESS.

When photographed towards the end of 1996 the NOL STENO (ex - TOKYO BAY; subsequently P&O NEDLLOYD TOKYO-98, JAY MATADI-98) had been chartered by P&O Container Line to Neptune Orient Line, operating in alliance with P&O and Maersk on an express service from the Indian sub-continent and eastern Mediterranean to North American Atlantic and Gulf ports. IMO number: 7118272. Flag: Bermuda. Gross tonnage: 56822 (48544 dwt) - 3057 TEUs. Completed: 1972 by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft, Kiel, Germany. Dimensions: loa: 289.6 m b: 32.3 m draught: 13.0. Main engine(s): 2, Sulzer-IHI 8 cyl diesels (originally 2, steam turbines). Power: 38700 kW. Speed: 23.0 kn. She was broken up at Alang in 1998.

Another container ship of an appearance unlikely to be seen at Halifax again is the SEA CAVALIER (ex - NEDLLOYD TOKYO-94, MAERSK TOKYO-90, C.R. TOKYO-87; subsequently SKY JUPITER-, MAERSK NARA-07, P&O NEDLLOYD BRISBANE-06, NEDLLOYD TOKYO-97, RALEIGH BAY-96, SEA CAVALIER-94) which was on the same service as the ship above. IMO number: 8308719. Managed by CGM Ned., French Antarctic Territories. Flag: France (Port aux Francais). Gross tonnage: 37814 (53726 dwt) - 2526 TEUs. Completed: 1985 by Chantiers de l¹Atlantique, St. Nazaire, France. Dimensions: loa: 243.7 m b: 32.3 m. Main engine(s): B&W Alsthom 7 cyl diesel. Power: 23570 kW. Speed: 21.0 kn. At the time she was operating for Sea-Land, which was soon absorbed within the Maersk empire. She is now Chinese owned.

B & N Shipmanagement's pallets (newsprint) carrier HUMBER ARM was a fairly frequent visitor to Halifax in the 1990s. IMO number: 7420182. Flag: Liberia. Gross tonnage: 3664 (7198 dwt). Completed: 1976 by Schichau-Unterweser AG., Bremerhaven. Dimensions: loa: 130.0 m b: 18.6 m draught: 6.7 m. Main engine(s): MaK 12 cyl diesel. Speed: 16.8 kn. She was sold to Aliaga breakers in July 2004 as the UMBER ARM after serious engine problems in May of that year.

Now for a couple of "stick" ships - ships with masts and derricks - rarely seen in Halifax any longer. These two, however, are still in service. The first is the general cargo ship OVERSEAS MARILYN, which was launched as the ESPERANZA and visited Halifax in March, 1996. IMO number: 7516967. Managed by OSG Ship Management. Flag: U.S.A. (New York). Gross tonnage: 15531 (25515 dwt) - 10 x 10 t derricks. Completed: 1978 by Hitachi Zosen K.K., Maizuru, Japan. Dimensions: loa: 172.9 m b: 22.8 m. Main engine(s): Hitachi-B&W 6-cyl diesel Power: 8352 kW Speed: 15.5 kn. She was renamed MARILYN in 2007, remains under the US flag and belongs to Sealift Inc. OSG tankers are frequent visitors to Imperial Oil.

The refrigerated fish carrier GRANITNYY BEREG is seen here being assisted by the tugs POINT HALIFAX and POINT CHEBUCTO in ECT colours in October, 1996. IMO number: 7638167. Managed by Reftransflot, Russia. Flag: Russian Federation (Kaliningrad). Gross tonnage: 12374 (9583 dwt). Completed: 1977 by VEB Mathias-Thesen-Werft, Wismar, Germany (DDR). Dimensions: loa: 152.2 m b: 22.2 m draught: 8.0 m. Main engine(s): MAN 9 cyl diesel. Speed: 17.2 kn. She remains in Russian ownership with the same name but is now managed by Aquaship Ltd. of Riga, Latvia.
