HOLYHEAD AND THE MERSEY - SUMMER 2007

While vacationing in Wales this summer I was able to make a few trips to the Mersey and to Holyhead. A selection of the ships photographed is to be found below.

STENA ADVENTURER

Comments: August 8. This shot was taken as the ferry passed the South Stack Lighthouse, Anglesey, on its way to Holyhead from Dublin. Photo 2 shows Irish Ferry's, Cypriot-flagged ULYSSES (50,938 gt / built 2001 by Aker Finnyards, Rauma) in port at Holyhead alongside STENA ADVENTURER. Photo 3: Irish Ferry's HSC JONATHON SWIFT (5,992 gt / built 1999 by Austal Ships Pty, Freemantle) at speed off the coast of Anglesey en route to Dublin.

Comments: July 22. A 4-crane bulker approaching Seaforth Docks, Liverpool. She has previously been named BEREZOVKA-98, GEORGIY BERNACHUK-96 and ANITA-88.

Year built / Builder: 1986, Daewoo, Okpo, S. Korea (yard no: 1032)

Details: 23,980 gt (36,756 dwt). Dimensions - Loa: 179.9 m, b: 31.0 m, draft: - m. Main engines: 1 MAN-B&W diesel providing 7,208 kW for a speed of 15 knots.

Comments: July 22. A Cypriot-flagged bulker / lumber carrier docked at East Float, Birkenhead. Former name: RUBIN DRAGON.

Year built / Builder: 1997, Imabari Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., Japan.

Details: 15,935 gt (26,551 dwt). Cranes - 4 x 30.5 t. Dimensions - loa: 169.51 m b: 25.5 m draft: 9.8 m. Main engine - 5 cyl Mitsubishi-built 2 stroke diesel producing 5,442 kW for a speed of 14.2 knots.

THARINEE NAREE

Comments: September 4. Another 4-crane, bulker / lumber carrier at Birkenhead - this time moored in Vittoria Dock. Former name: CYNTHIA PIONEER. Note the painting of a breaching Orca on the aft starboard superstructure.

Year built / Builder: 1994, Kanasashi Co. Ltd., Toyohashi, Japan.

Details: 14,431 gt (23,724 dwt). Cranes - 4 x 30.5 t. Dimensions - loa: 150.50 m b: 26.0 m draft: 11.60 m. Main engine - 6 cyl Kawasaki-built 2 stroke diesel producing 5,295 kW for a speed of 13.9 knots.

MSC CORSICA

Name / Owner (Manager) / Flag: MSC CORSICA   IMO No: 7905924, Anco Holdings S.A., Panama (Target Marine S.A., Piraeus, Greece). Flag: Greece (Piraeus).

Comments: July 22 approaching Seaforth. Good to see a ship that was originally built for one of Liverpool's famous steamship companies of the past - T & J Harrison. This container ship was launched as the AUTHOR and then was chartered to the Ben Line as BENARMIN in 1981, reverting to AUTHOR in 1982. She was subsequently named SCL INFANTA until 2000 and then SAFMARINE INFANTA until 2002.

Details: 27,994 gt (22,858 dwt); 1,608 teu. Dimensions - loa: 204 m b: 31.0 m. Main engine: 10 cyl Sulzer 10RND90 providing 21,330 kW for a speed of 20.5 kn.

MARIO A

Name / Owner (Manager) / Flag: MARIO A   IMO No: 9337377, Arkas Denizcilik ve Nakliyat, Izmir, Turkey. Flag: Turkey (Izmir).

Comments: August 21. A smaller containership than the MSC CORSICA with virtually the same teu capacity. This new-build appears to be chartered to the Grand Alliance and was also photographed a few weeks later while visiting Halifax on September 18. Photo 2 shows her at the CERES terminal.

Comments: August 21. Another Mediterranean Shipping Co. containership seen departing from the Gladstone Lock assisted by the new Romanian-built, Damen-type ASD 2810 tug, SMIT BARBADOS (294 gt / 2007). Photo 2. Former names: PUTNEY BRIDGE-02, MELANESIAN CHIEF-00, MIKHAIL TSAREF-94, ZIM RIO-94, CONTSHIP COLOMBUS-93, MIKHAIL TSAREF-91. The Chinese (COSCO) bulker SHOU CHANG HAI (27,766 gt / 1984) can be seen loading scrap metal in Gladstone Dock.

Comments: September 4. As its name implies, this veteran containership trades to the western Mediterranean and appears to be chartered to Hamburg-Sud. She is seen here departing Gladstone Lock. Photo 2.
