This page continues from the previous one. Following a selection of British-owned tramp ships employed in the ore trade, this page also features the then modern ore carriers, mostly under Denholm and Houlder Bros management. I believe that they were chartered to British Iron and Steel (BISCO) during this period. During the late 50s / early 60s at least one was in port every week.

Name / Owner: BARON RAMSAY O.N.: 1160128. (H. Hogarth and Sons Ltd., reg: Ardrossan).
Date photographed: 31 August, 1959. Older tramps of the "Hungry Hogarth" fleet were frequent visitors to Barrow transporting ore from Huelva, Spain - 5,500 tons in this particular shipment. BARON RENFREW (IMO number: 5002285; 3,635 gt; built 1935-03 by D. & W. Henderson, Meadowside, Glasgow;) and BARON CAWDOR (3,721/35 - same builder) were more frequently seen in this trade during the late 50s to 1960. At 401 ft x 53 ft they carried shipments of 6,800 tons of ore from Huelva on a regular basis.
Year built / Builder: 1929-07, D. and W. Henderson Ltd., Meadowside, Glasgow (yard no: 857m).
Details: 3,650 gt; 366 ft X 50 ft; single screw steamship, service speed 9.5 knots.
History: Remained with Hogarth's for 30 years. Scrapped at Port Glasgow in September, 1959. Note the date the photograph was taken!

Name / Owner: BELTINGE IMO number: 5040275. (Constants Ltd, reg: Cardiff).
Date photographed: 6 May, 1960. One or other of the five ships that made up the Constants fleet at the time were to be seen on almost a monthly basis arriving from N. African ports. The others were the steamships GARLINGE (2979/51) and HAWKINGE (2980/52) and the more modern motorships (machinery aft), LOTTINGE (4200/56) and SUSAN CONSTANT (3464/58).
Year built / Builder: 1951-10, William Gray & Co. Ltd., West Hartlepool (yard no: 1251)
Details: 2,979 gt (4,628 dwt); 340 ft X 42 ft; single screw steamship, service speed 10 knots.
History: The BELTINGE had 2 sisters, HAWKINGE and GARLINGE. In 1966 BELTINGE become TAKIS (K & M Shipbrokers, Panamanian flag), HAWKINGE became the LOZAN (Liberian flag) and GARLINGE the GAYO (also Liberian flag) - information from Ship's Nostalgia. TAKIS was later sold and renamed ROSE for Vervelonta & Co. in 1971, EAGLE III for P & F Marine in 1973 and SESUN for Universal Tramping in 1974. Broken up Karachi in November, 1974.

Name / Owner: ORMSARY IMO number: 5265461. (Scottish Ore Carriers Ltd., J & J Denholm Ltd., reg: Greenock).
Date photographed: Regular, along with the ARISAIG, CRAIGALLIAN, CRINAN, GLEDDOCH, and MORAR.
CRAIGALLIAN (IMO number: 5081669; 7,088 gt (9,550 dwt); built 1959, Chas Connell & Co Ltd, Scotstoun, Glasgow) and CRINAN (IMO number: 5082106; 7,086 gt (9,550 dwt); built 1960 at the same yard) were readily distinguishable from their earlier fleetmates by the more streamlined funnel and aft superstructure, and the single pole foremast (which also replaced the goalpost mast of GLEDDOCH and ORMSARY (both 6,859 gt; built 1953) in the ARISAIG (6,860 gt; built 1957 by Lithgows) and MORAR (IMO number: 5241398; 6,990 gt (9,250 dwt; built 1959-01 also by Lithgows). The ship berthed astern of CRAIGALLIAN in the photograph is the NAESS TRADER (6,853 gt; 1957 by W. Pickersgill & Sons, Sunderland, for Naess Denholm and Co. Ltd., Glasgow), which was similar in appearance to the ORMSARY.
The above ships carried between 8,500 to 8,900 tons of ore from N. African ports such as Almeria, Bone, Melilla and Pepel. Denholm Line's motorship WELLPARK (6,859 gt; built 1958: see NEEDLES below) was also fairly frequently seen in this trade.

Details: 6,859 gt (9,150 dwt); 427 ft X 57 ft; single screw steamship, service speed 11 knots. Other ships of the class, excepting the GLEDDOCH, were motorships.
History: ORMSARY - November 3, 1969: arrived at Bilbao to be broken up by Hierros Ardes.

Name / Owner: CLARKAVON IMO number: 5075543. (H. Clarkson & Co. Ltd., J. & J. Denholm Ltd., reg: London).
Date photographed: Regular, along with her sistership the CLARKEDEN (IMO number: 5075555; 6,861 GT (9,300 dwt); built 1958 by Short Bros.). Similar in appearance to the ORMSARY, she and her sistership sported a "C" on the shield at the centre of the St Andrew's cross on their funnels instead of the "O" of the Scottish Ore Carrier's ships (another view here). Note also superstructure detail differences abaft the funnels of the respective ships.
[The Steel & Bennie tug CAMPAIGNER (ID number: 9098; 248 GT; built 1957-10 by Lamont at Port Glasgow) was "down" from the Clyde to assist with the sailing of the newly completed HMS HERMES (October 31, 1959). CAMPAIGNER became the PULLWELL VICTOR in 1977, the MARAMBU in 1981 and the KAPPA in 1984. She was broken up at Aliaga in August, 2004].

Details: 6,860 gt (9,200 dwt); 426 ft X 57 ft; single screw motorship, service speed 11.25 knots.
History: She lasted until October 13, 1972, when she arrived at Faslane for breaking up. CLARKEDEN was sold in 1973 as the PHAEDON and again in 1974 becoming the BERANE before being broken up at Split in April, 1982.

Name / Owner: RIBBLEHEAD IMO number: 5294151. (Bolton Steam Shipping Co. Ltd. [North Yorkshire Shipping Co. Ltd.], reg: Middlesbrough).
Date photographed: 29 November, 1959 - arrived from Bone (N. Africa) with a cargo of 13,350 tons of iron ore. The ship unloading at the opposite berth is Clyde Shipping's NEEDLES - see below.
Other ore ships of the North Yorkshire fleet that unloaded at Barrow included the REDCAR (10,746 GT (15,505 dwt); built 1956), RIEVAULX (10,500 GT; built 1958) and the RIPON (10,371 GT; built 1956).
Year built / Builder: 1957, Lithgows Ltd., Port Glasgow (yard no: 1112).
Details: 10,730 gt; 505 ft X 69 ft; single screw motorship, service speed 11.5 knots.
History: 1972 ANTIKLIA (Greece), 1978 EVPO ARAMIS (Cyprus), 2.5.1979 grounded near Jeddah but refloated 4.5.1979, 8.4.1982 arrived at Bombay for demolition with work commencing 11.1982. Another photo and further details can be found at TEESSHIPS.

Name / Owner: OREOSA IMO number: 5264649. (Ore Carrier's Ltd., Houlder Bros. & Co. Ltd., reg: London).
Date photographed: The six Houlder Bros. ships with their names prefixed "ORE" were all regular callers at Barrow from N. African ports, carrying around 8,500 tons of ore.
Fleetmates included OREDIAN (1955), OREGIS (IMO number: 5264508; 1955-11 by Gray, W, Hartlepool), ORELIA (1954), OREMINA (1956) and OREPTON (1955). They were more like the contemporary Norwegian ore carriers in configuration (previous page) with the bridge incorporated in the aft superstructure. Gross tonnage of the sextet varied between 6,856 and 6,860.
[Note the Barrow-based, BTC grab dredger, FOULNEY (679 gt; lpp: 52.1 m x 11.0 m breadth; single screw steamer; speed: 10 knots), berthed aft of the OREOSA in the photo. FOULNEY (IMO number: 5511873) was completed by Ferguson Bros. at Port Glasgow in October, 1938 for the London Midland & Scottish Railway. She was scrapped in Belgium in August, 1965].

Name / Owner: ORECREST IMO number: 5264479. (Crest Shipping Co. Ltd., Ivanovic & Co. Ltd., reg: Nassau).
Date photographed: A number of companies owned one or more ore carriers similar to those illustrated above that were also regulars at Barrow. Among them was Crest's ORECREST, the first (but far from the last!) ship I saw under Bahamian registry.
[Note the Barrow-based, BTC hopper barges in the photo, the outer of which is the DALMENY (O.N.: 1136696; 472 gt; built 1914-07 by C. H. Walker at Sudbrook for Topham, Jones & Railton Ltd., London; lpp: 50.7 m x 8.4 m breadth; single screw steamship; speed: 8 knots. Scrapped at Barrow in 1963].
